MATT PRO WRESTLING "BASTILLE DAY" REVIEW
On July 14, 2024, Matt Pro Wrestling ran its second show, BASTILLE DAY, at the Lakewood Estonian House in Lakewood, NJ
Here are the results:
Mook and Stock, the Vetrano Brothers, defeated South Philly’s Finest when Mook pinned Jimmy Konway with a Sunset Flip after reversing a fireman’s carry
In a rematch from New Dawn 2024, Tony Chini, accompanied by Francesca Chini & Jack Maertens of the Mob Squad, defeated Mikey Midnight by nefarious means. Matt Pro promoter Ray Ray Marz, who was in the arena doing commentary, chastised Chini for cheating to win and ultimately restarted the match. A few moments later, Midnight pinned Chini with a small package, stunning the Matt Pro faithful.
The Full Blooded Italians of Ray Jaz and Zack Clayton defeated the Frat Party when Jaz pinned Fratboy Farva after an epic double team maneuver.
In an intergender tag team affair, “the All Day Advocate” James Gray and Tiffani Avatar defeated Captain Mike Goldstein and Ivy Platinum by disqualification when Platinum leveled Gray with a Singapore Cane. Ray Ray, witnessing weapons being used, decided to take matters into his own hands and suspended Matt Pro’s “Power Couple” for the next MPW event on October 5.
In a Dojo vs Dojo six-man tag, the Worldwide Dojo of Troy Locke, Sal Mistrella, & Mateo Marcelos defeated WeR1 of Jus Sayin, Oliver, and Daniel Alexander when “the Plexorcist” Locke pinned Alexander after a stalling Northern Lights Suplex. This match was a show-stealer.
In the first ever BASTILLE DAY BRAWL, Jack Maertens survived against Geoff Bravo, Franco Costanzo, and Devin Thatcher after Francesca Chini hit Bravo low as he went to deliver a 2K1 Bomb on her Mob Squad stablemate. Baguettes, cardboard Eiffel Towers, a Wet Floor Sign, and steel chairs were used.
The Durning Dynasty of Draven & Ayden Blaze defeated the Stepdads when, due to a skirmish on the floor between the Dynasty’s manager Cletus Gambino, Ray Ray Marz, and Radley Belmont, Ayden waffled Wade Kreuger with a thermostat to the melon.
In what many consider to be an absolute war, Tarzan Duran pinned Vi Daniel.
Mr. Darius Carter pinned Delirious in an absolute classic after Carter delivered a Royal Sweep for the three count.
NOTES ON THE SHOW:
LIVELY CROWD: For a Sunday afternoon minutes from the Jersey Shore, Matt Pro received a pretty solid attendance in Lakewood. The fans were invested all throughout, especially as the show went on.
TAG TEAM WRESTLING: There was a plethora of tag team matches at Bastille Day. While talking with Ray Ray Marz on commentary, he alerted me that he wanted to really bring back the tradition of tag team wrestling to Matt Pro. And with South Philly’s Finest, the Vetranos, Durning Dynasty, the Stepdads, and the FBI, there is a budding market of young, fresh duos looking to stand out.
LAW AND ORDER: Mr. Marz also has made some very tough calls in his promoter role, actually suspending Captain Mike Goldstein and Ivy Platinum for October 5, getting involved with EHW’s Director of Talent Cletus Gambino, and reversing the decision of Tony Chini’s win. You can see that Marz stands for the rules and that no one will break them on his watch. Honestly, it’s refreshing.
DARIUS VS DELIRIOUS: To me, there has been no finer match this year on the independent circuit than Mr. Darius Carter and Delirious at Bastille Day. This one has it all: brawling, fan interaction, great technical wrestling, and a stupendous end. Although the two-time Super 8 Champion picked up the win, everyone won. This is a match that is a must-see. Search it out when it’s released.
Matt Pro Wrestling is what local independent wrestling is all about. It’s family run, fan-driven, simple and to the point. It will only get better as time goes on. Growing pains will come, and it’s a given, but there is so much potential out of the Estonian Hall in Lakewood. You have to come see it live.
